Cookies and local storage let a browser remember small pieces of information between pages and visits.

Essential Storage

Science Scandal uses necessary session and security storage where applicable, your time-limited analytics-consent preference, a first-party reaction identifier and state, storage used by necessary security and anti-abuse functionality where applicable, and other preferences needed to operate features you choose.

Reader Reactions

A random first-party browser identifier helps enforce one active reaction of each type per story and browser. The server retains only a one-way hash, not the raw identifier.

Optional Analytics

Google Analytics is loaded only after you accept analytics. Analytics storage defaults to denied; advertising storage and advertising-related consent signals remain denied. Declining does not reduce site functionality.

Changing Your Choice

Use Privacy Choices in the footer at any time to reopen the non-modal consent banner. A new choice replaces the prior choice. Privacy Choices controls only optional Google Analytics.

Necessary Security and Anti-Abuse Services

Google reCAPTCHA is necessary security and anti-abuse functionality. It loads on pages containing a newsletter form independently of your analytics choice and may use browser storage for spam prevention. It is not controlled by Privacy Choices. Cloudflare Turnstile may provide necessary form security where configured. MailerLite receives information when you submit a subscription.
